Student Status Descriptions

In harmony with MCS’s mission to equip leaders for gospel ministry and in the spirit of supporting adult learners from diverse backgrounds, MCS is glad to offer a variety of student status options.

Degree-Seeking Students

  • Degree-Seeking Students are enrolled in one of MCS’s two degree programs (the MA or the MDiv), are actively enrolled in classes, and intend to complete the degree. For an overview of admissions policies for Degree-Seeking students, see pp. 19ff in the Institutional Catalog. At the time of admission, a program must be declared if the intent is to seek a degree. If an individual wishes to take graduate courses without being admitted to a degree program, see the description below.

Certificate-Seeking Students

  • Certificate-Seeking Students are enrolled in MCS’s Certificate in Biblical Studies program, are actively enrolled in classes, and intend to complete the program. For an overview of admissions policies for Certificate-Seeking students, see pp. 19ff in the Institutional Catalog. MCS provides this program for students who are not presently interested in pursuing a master's degree but who wish to enroll in courses for personal development. Certificate-Seeking Students should consult the required courses document to determine which courses to take.

  • Certificate-Seeking Students may request to change their status if they desire to enroll in a degree program (MA or MDiv). Credits earned while a Certificate-Seeking Student will be applied to the degree as long as the credits are applicable to the degree. Certificate-Seeking Students do not have academic advisors and are not required to complete any internship and mentorship responsibilities.

  • All students, regardless of which academic program they are enrolled in, will receive a certificate when they have met the 30-credit hour mark. Though the certificate is not a degree, it does serve to acknowledge the student’s accomplishment and encourages further progress toward an academic degree. Students who transfer in 20 credit hours or less are eligible to receive this Certificate in Biblical Studies.

Non-Degree-Seeking Students

  • MCS provides this opportunity for adults who are not presently interested in pursuing a degree but who wish to enroll in courses for personal enrichment. Non-Degree-Seeking Students may enroll in any course offered by MCS, provided space is available and prerequisites have been met.

  • Non-Degree-Seeking Students may request to change their status if they desire to enroll in a specific program. Credits earned while a Non-Degree-Seeking Student will be applied to the degree as long as the credits are applicable to the degree. Typically, no more than 10 credit hours are taken in the non-degree status though exceptions may be considered. Non-Degree-Seeking Students do not have academic advisors and are not required to complete any internship and mentorship responsibilities.

Affiliate Students

  • Another type of Non-Degree-Seeking student is enrolled as a degree-seeking student at another institution. These students intend to earn credit at MCS for transfer back to their home institution. Affiliate students may enroll in any course offered by MCS, provided space is available, and prerequisites have been met.

  • To be considered for admission, these students must be in good academic standing at their home institution and be eligible to return to that institution. These students should work closely with their home institution to ensure that the coursework they take at MCS is approved for transfer to their home institution.

  • Affiliate Students may request to transfer to MCS and enroll in a specific program if they so choose. Credits earned while an Affiliate Student will be applied as long as the credits are applicable to the degree. Credits earned from the student’s previous institution will be evaluated based on MCS’s standard transfer policies.
